Social Events: Formal Functions
By the 1920s formal functions were well established at
the University of Saskatchewan. Events such as the Halloween Dance, Pre-Med
Dance and OTC Dance complemented the annual functions of each of the colleges
and schools. Each event was carefully chaperoned, dress was
formal, ‘close’ dancing by couples was not allowed and alcohol
was prohibited.
During the 1960s the rules regulating formal and informal
functions were relaxed considerably. Dances were extended in length to
1 a.m. across the board in 1965 and the possibility of serving alcohol
was discussed. The tradition of couples attending dances together ended
as women increasingly went alone and wearing jeans, sweaters and other
casual clothing. The ‘Stag-Stagette’ function became the norm
as students found it more enjoyable to attend dances solo rather than
have to ask or wait to be asked to an event.
