Sports: Other Areas
Practice in Phys. Ed. |
|
This section is a catch-all of the sports
and athletic related activities that were not covered in the single sport
pages of the Student Experience web site. Some of the sports covered here
have come and gone while others are still popular today. Some of the sports
briefly obtained inter-collegiate status while others have always functioned
at an inter-mural level.

Many of the activities were and remain
organized by student and university clubs, while others are organized
by off-campus or city based clubs. What has remained constant over the
years is the students’ joy of physical activity. If sporting activity
had not been organized on campus, they would have spontaneously arisen.
Happy feet abhor a vacuum.
Curling
From The Greystone, 1949 |
|
Curling has been a popular winter past-time on
campus for most of the University’s history. In 1949 nearly
one in five students participated in campus curling activities.
There were intercollegiate, interfaculty and recreational teams.
Though much of the curling is today is played off campus, league
play and bonspiels remain an important part of the student experience.

Skiing
“The objectives of the Ski Club
are to advance and supervise amateur skiing at the University of Saskatchewan,
to encourage participation in competitive skiing and to promote interest
in skiing through social activities.” Survival - USSU Handbook,
1981-1982.

There has been a U of S Ski Club for more than half
a century.
Golf
Though golf was a popular activity with many students,
intervarsity golf never had a wide appeal. Huskie men’s and women’s
teams existed from the mid-1950s until the mid-1960s and competed with
other western university teams in the fall of each year. Golf, like tennis
was considered an unseasonable sport and was eventually dropped as an
inter-varsity sport.
