Social Activities: Introduction

Numerous and varied social distractions have always been available to University students. From the early years of the University until well
into the 1960s occasions such as banquets and formal dances were the most
common. Students would dance the night away in the dance halls and ballrooms
of Saskatoon, always under heavy chaperone. As the 1960s drew to a close
these events fell out of favour as students turned to more informal activities
and increasingly to off-campus events.
Beyond such occasions there were always
other experiences to be absorbed. Musical performances and dramatic productions
on stage and on radio were popular and frequent, as were the
endeavours of various groups and campus clubs. The Sheaf
and The Greystone yearbook, and even the short-lived Auricle magazine provided
a forum for the written word, and life in residence often provided
ample fodder for the publications.
