1 July 1941 - first television broadcasts begin (US)
6 June 1944 - "D-Day" landings on the Normandy coast
15 June 1944 - CCF win in Saskatchewan
7 May 1945 - end of the war in Europe
16 July 1945 - first atomic bomb exploded in New Mexico;
bomb used against the Japanese on 6 and 9 August
2 September 1945 - Japanese surrender
13 February 1947 - oil strike at Leduc, Alberta
1948 - invention of the transistor
10 January 1949 - vinyl records in 33 and 45 rpm versions introduced
23 March 1949 - Newfoundland becomes a province
