“ Students should not be permitted
to play on any team representing a University unless they are in regular
attendance and good standing. Inducements to enter a University should
not be offered to athletes simply because they are athletes. Such offences
occur too frequently in some Universities, and as the demoralizing results
are known, every precaution should be taken to avoid the fatal error.”

Athletics have always been a part of life at the University
of Saskatchewan. Whether intermural or intercollegiate, the spirit of
competition and companionship was, and remains today, a valuable aspect
of the student experience. By end of 1910's soccer, rugby (later football),
track and field, tennis, fencing and hockey were all present. Both men
and women were actively participating in a variety of inter-varsity, city
and provincial leagues. Over the subsequent decades, intercollegiate play
became formalized. While the Huskie teams represented the University and
became the home of the campus’s elite athletes, intermural leagues
catered to the recreational needs of the average student. Though participation
in athletics has always been high, the popularity of various sports have
waxed and waned, some disappearing completely only to return years later.
