Sports: Combative Sports

Combative sports, wrestling, boxing,
fencing and judo, have all seen a rise and fall in popularity in the student
population. Boxing, for example, experienced its golden age during the
1930s and 1940s. Judo made its first appearance on campus in the mid 1960s.
Fencing, never a major sport, has continued to attract some participants
since its start in 1930. Only wrestling maintained a sustained level of
popularity and is presently the only inter-collegiate combative sports
program on campus. Over time the other disciplines have functioned primarily
within student or university clubs.
