Performance: Student Radio
The first campus radio broadcasts took place as early as 1932, under the auspices of The Sheaf. In 1939 a department of Radio Drama (headed by the President of the Dramatic Directorate) was formed by the SRC to produce weekly programs on CFQC; The Sheaf also continued to contribute programming. The Radio Directorate was established in 1944; by the late 1940s, a temporary studio had been set up in Convocation Hall. By 1956, the Radio Directorate had become relatively inactive, but that year a radio studio with all but a transmitter was opened in the Memorial Union Building, laying the groundwork for the revival of campus radio.
By 1961-62 the Radio Directorate was producing nine hours of regular programming
per day. It was not
until 1965 that radio truly came to campus with the introduction of an
independent station. CJUS-FM (later CHSK-FM) went on the air at 8 a.m.,
9 December 1965, broadcasting in stereo at 89.7MHz at 3800 watts. The
philosophy of the station was to provide the Saskatoon community with
educational, informational and entertainment programs and in so doing
to promote and stimulate features of the education of University students.
