Huskies win the Vanier Cup, 1990 |
|
Football, known as rugby until 1948,
was first played on campus in 1911. The game was regionally very popular,
with the U of S being only one of several Saskatoon-based teams. The 1914-15
squad was the first official varsity team though individual colleges often
still fielded their own teams. Inter-university exhibition play began
in 1922, becoming formalized in 1927 with the formation of the Western
Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Union League. Known as 'the father of western
inter-collegiate football', University of Saskatchewan Professor Evan Hardy was instrumental
in the creation of the W.C.I.R.U.L. and donated the trophy that is awarded
to the league champion.
Intramural Action |
|
In addition to intercollegiate play,
the Huskies continued to play against regional teams such as the Regina
Roughriders and the Saskatoon Hilltops. A strong intramural program thrived
on campus until the 1960s. Intercollegiate play was suspended in 1946
but returned to campus in 1959. Ranked consistently among the best teams
in the nation, today’s Huskie football program is a much enjoyed
and well intrenched part of the student experience.
