Front row – Evelyn Paynter (Vice-President); Margaret Bishop (Committee); Dr. Manning (Conductor); Mrs. R. A. Spencer (Pianist); Jessie Rowles (Committee). The Choral Society was formed in February 1917 by Dr. Manning, and made its debut that month. The society was created in order to improve the singing at Sunday services to help create greater interest in, and larger attendances at, those meetings. Proceeds from many of the group's performances were donated to various causes, including the prisoners of war fund in 1917-18 and the relief fund for the starving children of Europe in 1920-21.
