- 1939 Conveniences of all kinds started showing up in advertisements during the late 1930s: portable typewriters, ready-cooked meals, and the "cold-wall refrigerator" were just a few. One commentator noted, "Nothing seems to typify our age more. Mother's stew comes in tins. Special sandwich spreads come ready-made. Music is efficiently transported to the home. Now we snatch bits of culture canned in pamphlets. We haven't got time to cultivate our tastes deeply any more." |
