Aaron Leland Sapiro was born in Oakland, California in 1884. After a childhood of relative poverty, he studied his way through a law degree and into an appointment to the California markets board staff, where he was introduced to the concepts of agricultural co-operation. He was active in organizing producers in the United States before being sent for by the Farmers’ Union leadership to promote pooling in western Canada. His reputation was often in question and, though he was influential in swaying producers towards the Pool, the Pool leadership eventually became disenchanted with him.
