A prairie culture of survival and help developed. These values are still ingrained in us.

Hamlets, villages and towns sprung up, often named alphabetically down the line by the railway companies. They offered services from banking to egg hatcheries. Water towers marked the prairie, joined by the grain elevator. There was a closeness of community interaction and a strong sense of local identity.
