1942: Hope Hunt First Dean of Household Science
In 1942 Dr. Hope Hunt was named the first Dean of Household Science;
ten years later, the college was renamed the College of Home Economics–“the
first, and for some time, the only college of home economics in Canada.”
Formal instruction in household science had begun on campus in 1917;
that department became a school within the College of Arts and Science in
1928. Upon her appointment to the
University in 1940, Hunt found both the physical quarters and the then
three-year program inadequate. A
four-year degree program was initiated the next year.
“As anyone will tell you,” a colleague noted, Hunt “has high standards,
calls a spade a spade, carries every battle through to the finish, and when the
smoke of the battle clears, has usually won.”1
Upon her retirement in 1965, the graduating class and alumni
established a scholarship in Dr. Hunt’s honour.
