Historical Note: The buildings that were first constructed on the barracks were envisioned as temporary quarters. Over the years, some permanent buildings were added to the barracks, but many of the old buildings were still being used as late as 1905. These "portable" buildings were pressed into service as officers' quarters, despite pleas from the commissioner to construct new buildings.
