RPL Photograph Collection Historical Note: The
Tourist Auto Camp was built along Wascana Lake in 1926. It had all
the modern conveniences – a ladies’ waiting room, showers,
and kitchen facilities. The camp was supposed to attract tourists
to the Queen City, a hard mission indeed considering that highway
access to Regina was poor in the 1920s. Although Regina was the hub
for three highways, all three were passable only in good weather.
Gravelling, which did not even begin until 1929, had tapered off by
1932 (when most roads in Saskatchewan were finally gravelled) and
maintenance of the roads all but vanished during the Great Depression. |
