Historical Note: The On-To-Ottawa Trek of 1935 was
organised mainly by Communist Party relief camp workers. The trek
started in British Columbia , where thousands of unemployed single
young men were languishing in federal work camps, forced into labour
in order to receive relief benefits. These young men intended to
take their grievances straight to Ottawa so politicians could hear
their plight first-hand. A thousand men 'rode the rails' from Vancouver
- and the trek picked up new members as it rolled across British
Columbia and Alberta . By the time it reached Regina on June 14,
there were 1,400 trekkers. The federal government ordered the men
to be halted in Regina . They were housed at Exhibition Stadium,
and local Regina groups and organisations helped to raise funds to
feed the trekkers. A total of $1,146 was raised by the Citizens'
Emergency Committee during a tag day on June 15. This was the most
money raised by any community the trekkers had passed through during
their trip. |
