Historical Note: The On-To-Ottawa Trekkers who were
arrested on July 1, 1935 are depicted in this composite photograph.
Prime Minister Mackenzie King, who was elected in 1936, had a far
gentler approach to welfare relief than R.B. Bennett had displayed.
Bennett's approach had involved sending in the RCMP to deal with
disgruntled camp workers, whereas King disbanded the camps shortly
after taking office. |
