Historical Note: Whitmore Brothers Limited was founded by Albert
E., George R., and Dr. Frank Whitmore, three brothers who were very innovative
businessmen in the fledgling town of Regina . J.A. Whitmore, their father, brought
his family to Moose Jaw in 1883, where J.A. became postmaster. The family moved
to Regina in 1888 when J.A. became postmaster for the Territorial capital. Albert
E. spoke fluent Sioux and was, at one time, the only qualified white interpreter
of Sioux in the territory. He later became an M.L.A., and he spearheaded the
campaign to bring the World Grain Exposition to Regina in 1933. Albert and George
were founding members of the Wascana Country Club. George was a president of
Sicks' Breweries. Between them, the three brothers were involved in many business
ventures within the city. They owned the Whitmore Brothers' Block (where Canada
Drug & Book was located), the Regina Steam Laundry, Regina Pharmacy, Regina
Theatre Ltd., and Whitmore Brothers (a coal and wood business). The brothers
were also prominent members of many community groups such as the Board of Trade,
the Exhibition board, and the Regina Aviation Board. |
