Description: | The Arctic Institute of North America's photographic collection consists of over 4000 photographs dating from the late 1800s. The collection came to the University of Calgary from McGill University in Montreal when AINA moved to Calgary in the 1970s. The bulk of the collection, consisting mostly of black-and-white prints, but also some negatives and slides, dates through the first half of the 20th century. The collection is particularly valueable for the insights it can bring to northern history, culture, and science. Many of the photographs reflect aspects of Inuit life; various scientific endeavors in such realms as geology, glaciology, and archaeology; and northern development, including oil and gas exploration. The photographs were taken on a variety of expeditions by Arctic explorers, scientists, mountaineers, police and military personnel. Primarily organized by photographer, the collection includes photographs by D.A. Nichols, Patrick D. Baird, M.H.W. Ritchie, Walter A. Wood, Henry Larsen, and Margaret Oldenburg. In cases where an expedition had many participating photographers, the photographs can be accessed by expedition name, such as the 1950's Exercise Muskox. |
