From the Athabaska to the Mackenzie Delta - A Journey on Canada's Inland Waterways

This virtual exhibit documents the journey that Emrys Jones made from Waterways, Alberta to Aklavik, Northwest Territories in the summer of 1928. This was the golden age of river boat travel before roads and rail penetrated the northern landscape. It was a time when sternwheelers and their barges were the mainstay of the northern economy.

All photographs of the journey were taken by Jones and represent only a sample. Jones donated his collection of photographs to the Institute of Northern Studies in the late 1960s, and they now form part of the Institute of Northern Studies fonds at the University of Saskatchewan Archives.
