Untitled Document F.H. Edmunds fonds – MG 18. -- 1917-1964 (inclusive). -- 4.96 m of textual records, 144 photographs.

Frederic Harrison Edmunds was born in Hawarden, North Wales in 1898 and received his B. Sc. and M.Sc. at the University of Liverpool in 1922 and 1923 respectively. In 1925, he came to Canada and joined the Department of Soils at the University of Saskatchewan. Professor Edmunds was then named chairman of the Department of Geological Sciences in 1961 and he held this position until the time of his death in 1965.

This fonds contains personal and research files on various topics, including a study of the Clwydian Range in North Wales, petrology, mineralogy, soil composition, oil and gas, sodium sulphate and soil mapping. In addition, there are a considerable number of area studies for Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and specifically the Lloydminister area, as well as 75 research reports done for private companies. There are also articles on poetry and the theatre - two of Professor Edmunds' personal interests.

This fonds is organized into 6 series:

A. Personal
B. Geological Area Studies
C. Corporation and Private Reports
D. Maps and Graphs
E. Reports Compiled by Others
F. Photographs

A. Personal. - 1917-1964.

This series consists correspondence, research notes, and speeches and articles by Edmunds and others. Edmunds’ research notes pertain to: Study of the Clwydian Range in North Wales, British Studies, Canadian Studies, and Recession of Ice from Saskatchewan.

(1) Correspondence, 1917-1964.

The correspondence in this file can really be divided into two groups. The first group of letters were written while Edmunds was still in England and these are largely made up of references and recommendations which were written for Edmunds. The second set of letters were written during Professor Edmunds’ years at the University of Saskatchewan and these communications include invitations to speak to various organisations, references to conferences which were held, discussions of several articles and general correspondence dealing with Edmunds’ activities in the geologists who undertook a group expedition 1n 1960 and an undated account of Professor Edmunds’ impressions of two trips taken out of Tehran. Then, too, there is a copy of W.O. Kupsch’s tribute to F.H. Edmunds.

(2) Research Notes

a. Study of the Clwydian Range in North t4ales

Professor Edmunds prepared his masters’ thesis at the University of Liverpool on the topic of the Clwydian Range in North Wales. This file includes notes and data compiled in his studies along with draft copies of certain portion of the thesis. There is also an excerpt of a speech which was given specifically on the Ludlow Rocks which are found in the Range.

b. British Studies

This file consists of undated material dealing with the geology of the British Isles. Included are analyses of soil, studies of rock formation and notes on petrology. The notes are, in most instances, very brief and some may appear to be some what isolated. But since no chronological references are made, the material has been filed largely in the order in which it was found.

c. Canadian Studies

These notes are taken from studies which Professor Edmunds carried out while in Canada. The file includes studies of soil composition, rock formation and water supply. There are also papers dealing with mineralogy and mechanical analysis.

d. Recession of Ice from Saskatchewan

F.H. Edmunds wrote a history on the deglaciation of Saskatchewan and this file consists of materials and data gained from his field trips and research. There are also maps of the area along with complete articles written on specific aspects of deglaciation.

(3) Speeches and Articles

This file is comprised of speeches and articles which were prepared by Professor Edmunds. Since there is no information as to when the papers were prepared, they have simply been filed in an alphabetical order based on the title of the papers.

“A Toast to the Albert Grade VIII, 1943”
“Canadian Production of Oil and Gas”
“Finding Oil”
“Geological Aspects of Everyday Life”
“Geological Research at the University of Saskatchewan”

(4) Speeches and Articles By Others

This file is made up of speeches and articles which were among the Edmunds papers but were not written by Edmund. These papers have been filed alphabetically on the basis of the authors’ names and an index of the papers has been prepared.

Willgohs, J.F. “Notes on the Isle of Runde, Near Aalesund”

B. Geological Area Studies.

The studies in this file are all designated as dealing with a specific area, although most of them were prepared for particular corporations. General provincial divisions are narrowed to include surveys of communities which are filed alphabetically under the general headings. There are also all-inclusive headings such as “Various Areas” which have been filed to constitute divisions distinct from the provincial headings. The studies which are filed were all prepared by Professor Edmunds and they include data on soils and minerals, reports, maps, graphs and general information relating to the particular areas involved. The following index is a guide to the various areas which are included in the file.

C. Corporation and Private Reports

This series consists of reports which Professor Edmunds compiled at request of corporations, government departments, or private individuals. Most of the reports are concerned with mining possibilities and results, particularly oil and gas prospects on the prairies.

There is also a good deal of information concerning soil testing as well as data relating to mining procedures. The reports have been alphabetically filed on the basis of the names of those to whom the reports were presented, and the following is a complete list of those names.
