Robert Martin Bone was born on 20 June 1933. His first degree was a B.A (1955) in Geography from the University of British Columbia. He earned a M.A. from the University of Washington (1957) and a Ph.D from the University of Nebraska (1962). Employed as Geographer with the Geographical Branch of the Government of Canada from 1957 to 1963, Dr. Bone joined the faculty of the U of S Department of Geography in 1963. He remained in Geography until 1970 when he became Professor and Director of the Institute of Northern Studies. With the closure of the INS in 1982, Dr. Bone returned to the Department of Geography. In 2000 he became the Acting Head of the Department of Native Studies. Among Dr. Bone=s areas of expertise are the Canadian sub-arctic and arctic and the Soviet Union.
The majority of this fonds consists of material from two studies with which
Dr. Bone was associated. The first, the Stoney Rapids Project, was conducted
while Bone was in the Department of Geography. It started with a small grant
from the Canadian Wildlife Service to examine the caribou hunt; specifically,
the number of people involved and the number of animals taken. The project,
however, grew to encompass a wider study of the region and its inhabitants.
The second study was undertaken while Bone was with the Institute of Northern
Studies (INS). The Northern Saskatchewan Housing Needs Survey was a co-operative
effort between the Department of Northern Saskatchewan and the Northern Municipal
Council. The primary focus was to investigate the housing needs of the Métis
in northern Saskatchewan, but the survey contained a great deal of socio-economic
data. Both of these projects offer a unique snapshot of the communities studied.
Additionally, the fonds contains material of a more general nature that deals
with northern Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba, Yukon and Northwest Territories.
This fonds has been organized into three series:
