Detail of Slide #127

The search for the king of the Arctic is on. In past history the polar bears have been desired by the wealthy for their elegant colour or entertainment, feared by polar explorers and at times eaten by them. They were worshipped by the natives who used their fur to make warm trousers and shot by trophy hunters to display the head and skin on their walls or as bear rugs. Now Nanook is protected and admired. Most of the bear hunting is done with the camera.
