Eli Bornstein was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on December 29th, 1922. He studied for a period at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Chicago, but received his Bachelor of Science (1945) and Master of Science (1954) degrees from the University of Wisconsin. He also attended the Academie Montmarte of Fernand Leger (1951) and the Academie Julian (1952) in Paris. After teaching at the Milwaukee School of Arts (1943-47) and the University of Wisconsin in (1949), Bornstein became Head of the Department of Art at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon (1950).

Bornstein is best known for his Structurist Reliefs, a term coined by the international art annual he founded in 1960 entitled The Structurist. He is also known for his large sculptures, including "Growth Motif", a 15-foot high aluminum construction for the Saskatchewan Teacher's Federation. His works have shown and been collected internationally in both Canada and the United States. He resigned in 1971 but continued as a Professor of Art until his retirement. He continues to reside in Saskatoon.
