The urge to make a child's gender obvious by dress is comparatively recent. In
earlier periods young boys and girls were commonly dressed in similar clothes,
garments which we would today describe as feminine. The gender differentiation of
males happened near the age of five with a first hair cut, a shirt with a
collar, and trousers.
